Creative Fatigue: Why ads decline – and what you should check

Creative fatigue describes the declining effectiveness of an advertising medium over the course of its run. Repetition can play a role. However, poorer results alone don't prove that a video is "used up": The target audience, competition, offer, measurement, or landing page may also have changed.

Therefore, a brief diagnostic analysis is worthwhile before commissioning a new production. This prevents you from working on the video's opening when the real problem only arises after the click.

Compare similar conditions

Don't just look at yesterday versus today. Examine a meaningful time period, the outputs, relevant changes, and the quantity of observed results. Individual queries can fluctuate significantly. A small data set is often insufficient to determine a reliable cause.

Note changes to the offer, the campaign, and the website. Has the price changed? Is the form loading? Are completed inquiries still being recorded correctly? Such questions may seem unspectacular, but they are important before a creative reorientation.

These signals lead to different checks

ObservationInvestigate first
Less response to similar outputEntry point, relevance, repetition, and comparison period
Clicks remain, inquiries decreaseLanding page, form, offer, and measurement
Inquiries remain, quality decreasesMessage, expectation, and achievement People
Costs increase across multiple adsCampaign conditions and market environment, not just one video

An increasing average frequency can be a clue, but it's not a general rule to stop a campaign. The goal, timeframe, and target audience influence its interpretation. Without context, a fixed number as a rule is of little use.

What should you actually renew?

If the opening is no longer effective, test a different approach to the same offer. If the message is interchangeable, a new argument or better evidence may be needed. A different color filter won't solve the content problem.

A possible example: The existing ad claims a solution is simple. A new version shows a concrete step. This not only changes the interface but also answers a previously unanswered question. This remains a test idea, not a guarantee of better results.

TikTok also recommends updating advertising materials when their effectiveness diminishes in its Creative Best Practices Similarly, renewing advertising materials when their effectiveness diminishes. Which change will help you needs to be determined based on your specific offering.

Replace, add, or pause?

Leave viable comparison options in place, provided the budget and campaign structure allow for it. If everything is replaced at once, there's no clear direction. Decide in advance which observations warrant continuing or discontinuing the campaign, and consider the limited significance of small data sets.
