Employee Advocacy: Supporting Employees Without Mandating Advertising

Employee Advocacy describes the voluntary support and public advocacy of employees for their company. This can include sharing relevant content, contributing their own professional expertise, or offering a personal recommendation. It's not the same as a mandatory posting schedule for private profiles.

The term overlaps with corporate influencers, but has a different focus. While a corporate influencer program often supports independent professional engagement, employee advocacy can also start more easily. The crucial point is that participation remains credible and sustainable in everyday work.

Why should someone participate?

A good invitation explains the purpose and offers choices. For example, employees can share a helpful resource or talk about an experience they are proud of. If the content has no value for them personally, a request for reach quickly becomes a chore.

Therefore, ask which topics people actually want to represent. A company announcement about a new process might not be very interesting to outsiders. A concrete explanation of how this will make things easier for customers, on the other hand, can be useful.

A pre-written proposal can be helpful, but it shouldn't be the only acceptable language. If everyone publishes the same text, the personal perspective that could make a contribution interesting disappears.

Where are clear boundaries necessary?

Clarifies which accounts are being used, how much time is available, and how someone can end their participation. Private login credentials do not belong in the program administration. Questions regarding working hours, data protection, and internal participation rights should be clarified with the relevant departments.

Commercial communication also requires appropriate categorization. The guidelines of the media authorities guideline provides a basis for labeling issues. A personal sender does not automatically make a promotional statement a private recommendation.

What could a first attempt look like?

Choose a relevant topic and offer interested employees various options: sharing and categorizing a post, answering a question, or explaining their own experience. Then collect feedback on the effort and support provided.

Don't just evaluate reach. Did the person feel comfortable with the content? Were approvals clear? Did relevant conversations arise? Such observations help develop a meaningful program instead of sorting people based on visible reactions.

When does this become a larger program?

If several people want to regularly develop independent content, topic development, training, and editorial support can be beneficial. In this case, a structured approach is worthwhile. corporate influencer program.
