Planning influencer collaborations: From selection to evaluation

An influencer collaboration doesn't necessarily start with the largest follower count. What's crucial is whether the person, audience, topic, and offer are a good fit. Only then can you assess which format makes sense and how you want to measure the collaboration.

For companies, this means: jointly planning selection, briefing, production, and distribution. This article will help you prepare for a single creator collaboration. Ongoing influencer management with continuous support is a larger undertaking that requires separate coordination.

What problem should the collaboration solve?

Do you want your brand to gain recognition within a relevant community? Does a complex product or service require a clear demonstration? Or would you like to produce material that can then be used for advertising? These goals lead to different partners and services.

Distinguish between reach and content production. When a creator makes a video for your channels, you don't automatically buy access to their audience. Conversely, a post on their profile doesn't automatically include all editing and promotional use by your brand.

Therefore, write down the desired contribution Social Media Strategy first. A clear brief, for example, is: "Our product should be understandable in a realistic application; we need a post and defined variations for our advertising."

How do you find suitable creators?

Review several recent pieces of content instead of just the profile picture and reach. What questions does the community ask? Which topics are addressed credibly? How are previous collaborations implemented? Does their style fit the task without requiring them to completely compromise their brand identity?

Requests relevant insights for the intended channel and timeframe. Isolated peaks can provide a distorted picture. Typical results from comparable content and the composition of the target audience reached are also interesting. Such data helps with selection but doesn't replace your own testing.

The briefing: Clear about the task, open about the implementation

A good creator briefing explains the offer, the target audience, and the binding boundaries. It doesn't dictate every gesture. The person should be able to contribute their experience with their own audience instead of reading someone else's advertising copy.

  • Goal: What effect should the content support?
  • Target audience: What situation and prior knowledge are relevant?
  • Key information: What needs to be conveyed accurately?
  • Evidence: What can be shown or actually tried out?
  • Scope: What ideas and wording can the creator develop independently?
  • Outputs: Which publications, variations, and files are required?
  • Process: Who reviews what, by when, and in how many agreed-upon rounds?

Highlight statements that require expert review. If a product isn't suitable for every application, the presentation shouldn't blur this line. A compelling introduction is welcome; an unsubstantiated performance promise is not.

Consider rights, labeling, and budget together

Clearly define the intended scope of use: channels, duration, regions, organic publication, paid advertising, and edits. The reuse of raw material or publication via other accounts should also be explicitly agreed upon. Anything not discussed should not simply be considered included.

Commercial content must be clearly categorized according to the specific circumstances. The Media authorities explain advertising labeling in online mediaClarify any open questions before publication and have the specific agreement legally reviewed if necessary.

Therefore, don't just compare offers based on the price per video. Concept development, production, publication, revisions, exclusivity, and advertising usage can vary. A cheap entry-level package might be incomplete for your actual needs; conversely, a more comprehensive package might include services you don't require.

Plan approvals without endless loops

A practical process consists of early idea coordination, draft review, and final approval. Internally, designate a responsible person to consolidate feedback. Conflicting individual comments from multiple departments make production unnecessarily difficult.

First, check for factual accuracy and agreed-upon requirements. Matters of taste should be weighed against the idea and the target audience. Not every unusual phrasing is a mistake. If you select a specific creator because of their writing style, this style should still be recognizable in the results.

How do you meaningfully evaluate the collaboration?

The evaluation begins with the agreed-upon goal. For an explanatory collaboration, relevant follow-up questions and the use of additional information are important. For an inquiry campaign, it should be clear which contacts were actually a good fit. Reach alone doesn't answer either of these questions.

Use transparent link tags and define which data creators and companies contribute to the evaluation. Keep the limitations in mind: Not every subsequent contact can be clearly attributed to a single post. A poor result could also be due to the offer or the landing page, not just the video.
