Creating a product video: content, process and effort

A product video shows how a product works, what it's designed for, or what it looks like in use. The focus of each of these aspects determines the design. Therefore, we plan product videos based on the questions your customers have before making a purchase decision.

Demonstration, Explanation, or Advertisement?

A demonstration makes a process visible. An explanatory video categorizes functions and use cases. A promotional product video focuses on a specific message. These formats can be combined, but shouldn't inadvertently become a film trying to do too many things at once.

A hypothetical example: For a tool, a detailed recording of the work step can answer an open question about its use. A short advertisement might only show the central problem and refer to the product page for details. Both versions require separate planning.

What belongs in the product briefing

We need the target audience, the intended use, key functions, and expert opinions. This includes available products, accessories, the filming environment, and any potential limitations. A responsible person should be able to review and approve technical content.

If certain details need to be visible, they will be added to the shot list before filming. This also applies to differences between product variants. Assumptions about product features do not replace approval from your company.

Production and Post-Production

After agreeing on the concept and workflow, the agreed-upon footage is shot. Editing, sound, overlays, and subtitles are then added to create the required versions. Whether additional animations or other visuals are useful depends on the specific explanation.

In the Campnetic project, products were staged in their actual usage environment. For other products, a controlled environment may be more suitable. The filming location is determined by the video's purpose.

Cost Factors and Scope of Delivery

Costs arise from preparation, filming conditions, the number of products, required subjects, and post-production. A new language version or an additional use case may require separate work steps. Therefore, the main film, variants, and scope of use are explicitly agreed upon.
